Just dealt with this same issue, just last night.  My wife's XP Laptop 
had a DVD drive, but no player.  Tried Media Player Classic that others 
raved about, but it wouldn't play.  Then googled, and found out about 
codecs, and got K-Lite Codec pack.  Ran the install, UNCHECKED 
everything except for Media Player Classic, and it runs like a champ!  
Actually, I still have the Install file (freeware)  Want me to send it 
to you?
