Hi Charles. 

For what it's worth, let me share with you a similar experience I had last
month.  I had a similar problem except that the message was "missing NTLDR".
I couldn't recover even going to the console using the original OS
installation disk and doing a fixboot, etc. 

I ended up purchasing a "rocketfish" enclosure to convert the boot drive
into an external USB drive.  Of course, I had to purchase a new harddisk
also.  The with that new harddisk connected only, I reinstalled the
operating system and did all the updates. After this I connected the "old"
harddisk to the USB port that "rocketfish" gives me, and without any hassle
whatsoever, recovered all my data.  Since then, I've been using it to back
up the data periodically to the converted USB drive. 

I wish you luck in finding a solution to your situation.
