Format and Inputmask both set to default. The baseclass is my original subclass of the controls, there is no code there at all. I have looked at a similar textbox on another app which works perfectly and cannot find any difference. Whilst testing I found it to be intermittent!! On about 10% of occasions I could click into the day portion. I copied a date textbox from another app on to the form and it behaved correctly. In the end I substituted the copied one and deleted the original and all is well. I still can't understand what the problem was but - hey, it's gone away <g>.
