There's seldom, if ever, any advantage to paying a yearly fee. *

I've never heard that Amex builds your credit any faster, but I have
been annoyed on a few occasions when finding out at checkout time that
Amex isn't taken at a particular store.

I have one, don't pay a yearly fee (or I WOULDN'T have one!), and other
then the fact that it's not taken in as many places, don't see any
advantages or disadvantages to it over my other cards.

* That being said, my Father-in-Law once opened an Amex account, and
paid the $75 yearly fee, because they were running a promotion in
conjunction with an airline - 10% off if you opened an Amex account. He
was purchasing 2 tickets to Switzerland, and with the promotion, saved
$400. Well worth the fee, and he closed the account before a year had
passed. This is an exception, though.
