In the Linux cli world, the defacto net scanner is still nmap, I 
believe. You target it at a network, say 192.168.1.0-254, and it'll find 
hosts and identify operating systems, find exposed ports, etc.

You can direct it at your network from the outside to find 
vulnerabilities. Yes, you could direct it at microsoft.com too, but 
you'd probably be getting some phone calls shortly thereafter.

Free *and* open source.
