I started doing a 20 hr/week consulting gig for this
company at a ridiculously low rate of $32.00 /hr as a
1099 contractor. No benefits at all. It's like
having a $42,000 job with benefits assuming I worked
40 hours a week. I took this to smooth over the
dramatic drop in business from my home builder
clients.

I'm working directly for a government client whom I've
known for a while and who I know will be a good guy to
work for. I'm able to work some of the hours at home.
He's reasonable, smart, laid back, and there won't be
any trouble getting paid or getting an ulcer, and
he's the main reason why I've accepted this low rate.

The work involves Internet research, computerizing his
office, computer and technology expertise when
evaluating the work of other subcontractors, and
general all-around support such as creating technical
briefs, presentations, evaluations, etc.

I have a 3-month contract, which will renew every
three months as long as he has money. I am not
working directly for him, but for a company that has a
labor contract with him. They get a percentage profit
on my hours, although I don't think it's much.
Perhaps as little as 10%.

Anyway, today I get an email to do some work for the
company directly as a "technical lead" for a different
customer. This is not in my statement of work and not
what I signed up for. So essentially, they will be
billing me out at probably $100 bucks an hour and
still paying me $32 an hour.

1. This was never discussed before.

2. This was never in the statement of work.

3. Although my homebulder customers are not giving me
work like they used to, when they do give me work I am
unable to do it as quickly as before. I fear I may
lose them as clients when their work picks up. They
are billed at $90.00 / hr.

What do you think? Should I complain? Am I being too
rigid or am I setting myself up for slave labor?
