I have one. I bought it because I was spending a lot calling my mom out of state since my dad went into a nursing home. I paid 39.95 plus 6.95 shipping for the usb gadget and 1 year of service. I'm in Rochester NY but the closest phone number I could get was NY City. It doesn't matter, because you don't need a local number for it to be free, just makes people you call wonder who would be calling from that area code. Also, it can't replace your regular line unless you want all your local callers to pay long distance fees to call you back. It didn't work at first, but following directions on the website and getting an update did the trick; it took me maybe 1/2 hour to get it working.
When I restart my system, it takes about a minute for the Magic Jack software to load and it puts an icon in the system tray. Hasn't interfered with anything else. I can click the icon to dial or just pick up the handset of the phone connected to it. A small screen form appears and I can dial from the form or minimize it and use the phone attached to it to dial (area code plus phone number). The only ads I have been getting so far are from Magic Jack, i.e., sign up for international calls, set up your voice mail, and they aren't annoying - plus, I don't have to look at the form at all. It keeps track of numbers I've called and the minutes I talked; I find that a convenience. For me, it's been okay and I've saved money, but I don't always get perfect reception. Sometimes there is a clicking noise and I have been cut off a few times. But this happened even more frequently when I used USADatanet for long distance from NY to NJ and also often happens when I'm calling cell phones. I just call back on my regular line if the connection is poor or I get cut off. Most times it works fine. I probably wouldn't use it for an important sales call when I would look stupid getting cut off, but I use it for tech support calls and for friends and family. I can make a call and use other programs - no problem. I have ECG long distance as well, 2 1/2 cents per minute if you sign up for e-billing. 6 cents per minute to my brother in NZ. Great customer service and great connections. But I ordered Magic Jack when my bill was $60.00 for a little over 2,000 minutes one month. Magic Jack has already paid for itself. I haven't tried it, but you can also take Magic Jack with you on trips. Plug it into your laptop in your motel and you have free long distance as long as you have a free internet connection. For me, it was a pretty small investment/gamble to try it. It doesn't replace my regular phone or long distance carrier but it has saved me money and I'm pretty happy with it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Madigan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 12:50 PM Subject: [NF] Magic Jack >A customer of mine just got a magic jack.
