        It isn't even close. The sheer populations of the respective areas  
are just about impossible to overcome, and add to that the fact that  
both lived 500 years before Jesus...

        The point was, of course, that Stephen's appeal to sheer numbers as  
"proof" is just plain silly.

        What's more likely in support of the man/myth question is the fact  
that the Jesus story so closely parallels the story of Mithra, a pagan  
god who predates Jesus, and whose followers were the primary  
"competition" to early Christianity. It seems much more likely that  
the Jesus story was simply the Mithra story that was co-opted by the  
early Christians, in much the same way that they co-opted most pagan  
holidays to make them Christian holy days.
