Probably one of the first software success stories was VisiCalc,
which was freely copyable. People would bring it into offices and
install it on their own machines, and then use it to do the sort of
number crunching that was not possible before spreadsheets. After a
while management would take notice and "get" the whole computer
notion. The result was lots of purchased copies that would never have
been sold if the initial copying hadn't taken place.
