As in the Paul Bunyan stories, it was so cold a voice would freeze, so nobody could hear any noises.
It was in the cold Winter freezes that I all the more appreciated the warmth kicked off by computers. I had all of our Servers in my office, under the premise that I needed to hear the hard drives and tape drives clicking and whirring. But it was really to help keep warm as our building heat was not as effective in Winter as the Air Conditioner was in the Summer <g>... In the coldest weeks I would usually stock up heavily at the grocery stores, and do minimal trips between the house and the office. At night I would hear loud CRACK noises as the sheets of ice on the roof would split under their own weight and the snow on top of the ice. I had natural gas to heat the house (2,500 SqFt), and with no pets would let the temp drop to 60 during workdays, and begin to heat up to 68 an hour before I left the office. By the time I got home it was back to 67 or so, and overnight I would let it drop to 60 again. I knew folks with pets and small kids who had to keep their places warmer, and man did they pay out the nose for heating! Still, I really loved it out there.
