Sorry... I didn't mean to confer ignorance on anyone. There are some regulations in effect that make it so Freon is extracted from old refrigerators and air conditioners. Otherwise it would just leak into the atmosphere. Freon isn't manufactured anymore. From what I've been told, the used stuff that is extracted is then sold to folks to recharge old-style car AC units and home AC units. It has become so expensive lately that a lot of people convert rather than recharge, and that probably was the whole point. When I was in college, Freon was this great savior of the world because it was a non-reactive refrigerant. Everything else beforehand was noxious or even caustic. Freon didn't work as well as ammonia and other refrigerants but it was seen as so much safer that it was used everywhere. Little did we know...
