It was Oahu we lived on, Schofield Barracks.  The schools were in Wahiawa,
but a lot of the gang members were from Whitmore.  The kids from Whitmore
seemed to really enjoy beating on the military kids.  It may have been a
race issue with local vs non local races.  But I think it was more socially
based.  Who knows?  I could not wait to leave, although I knew I would miss
the reefs where skin diving was so great.  I went back 2 times as an adult
"non-tourist".  Both times I managed to not get into any scraps, I stayed
away from the troubled areas of the islands (Maui, Big Island as well as
Oahu).
