I am setting up a system to Hotsync a Palm device to a Primary PC over the Internet. The Primary connects to the Internet through EVDO which means a dynamic IP address so I use DynDNS. The Palm plugs into an Internet connected laptop. Hotsyncs work but the user needs to enter name or address information into the Palm before each Hotsync. I would like to have the Palm retain the Name settings so a non technical user can simply plug in and press the Hotsync button. The Primary PC has two different identities:
LAN - ServerName.DomainName.local (IP address fixed in the LAN range) Internet - DynDNSname.com (changing IP address) When the Palm connects with the Primary PC Name field set to the Internet address, the Palm does the DNS lookup to find the correct address and does the Hotsync. Afterward, the Name and Address fields have been "updated" to the LAN values. The user will need to change both fields before syncing over the Internet again. Palm seems to be clueless so it appears the only hope is to somehow convince the Primary PC that it has the Internet identity when it gives it's identity to the Palm Desktop software. This would allow it to update the Palm with information that would allow another Hotsync without any changes. This is difficult to explain so it is understandable. I originally included more details but tried to eliminate non-essential details. If I went to far feel free to ask for more detail! Does someone have a clue how I would go about implementing this or have other suggestions?
