Michael, We upgraded from V8 to the latest corporate version 3 months ago and have ended up kicking it out. It was just so unstable and SLOW SLOW SLOW despite excluding filetypes such as dbf, cdx etc. Workstations would suddenly slow down to a crawl for no reason and CPU usage skyrocket to 100% - used up by the Symantec Services may I add.
The problem seemed to be more prevalent with AMD processors for some reason, but as we are split about 80% to 20% AMD:Intel it was a pain. We trialed Sophos and last month installed Sophos Endpoint suit which is a smaller footprint, centrally controlled via an excellent administration suite and just seems to do the job. Coupled with that, it is also cheaper, especially if you tell them you are upgrading from Symantec and really easier to install. Symantec seem to have taken a huge leap backwards in their products over the last few years. Even though V8 was "kludgy" it did the job with a small footprint but as for support - forget it, unless you want to learn Punjabi. Our main reason for upgrading was the pain of administering the AV for each of the individual workstations which need to "exclude" certain file types to speed them up but on the fly so to speak. This, along with Symantec's seemingly random weird behaviour on workstations, similar to what you are experiencing but even MORE so with the newest version was the clincher. With Sophos, this is a breeze and it is literally a fit and forget solution. Just recently the date stamp on the virus definitions stopped showing on the client screen and now just shows blank space. This is a known issue. Everything else seems to run fine. They are still delivering antivirus definition updates. IS there any advantage to upgrading to a new version of Corporate edition? I'm inclined to leave well enough alone, but my client is getting nervous. I can't see spending the upgrade price for a 10 pack that will possible slow down the system. any thoughts?
