The strongest motivator that come before all others is the survival 
instinct.  A prisoner doing a life sentence will adjust, and can even be 
punished or rewarded in that setting.  For example certain privileges 
can be awarded or withdrawn like better or worse meals, right to use the 
library, visitations, etc, and then their is alway solitary confinement.

The criminal justice system should not be about revenge, torture, and 
pain.  The taking of a life is punishment enough, and if the death 
penalty is carried out, it should be in a dignified and humane manner.  
Remember, God is the giver of all life.  Your life and my life are gifts 
from God,  Nobody has the right to take away what God has given; 
because, it is a kind of circumvention of God authority and will.

Still, in certain cases where there are no other better alternatives, 
capital punishment must be used, or at least threatened, so it can act 
as a deterrent against a criminal repeating the highest crime of all; 
murder.
