Hi folks, Running Win 2K SP 4 on an old Compaq Deskpro. The internal floppy drive on this machine is broken, and it's a proprietary piece of ... stuff ... that can't be replaced with a generic floppy drive. I have an old piece of software that requires access to the A: drive.
I'm trying to force a USB floppy drive to be recognized as A:. Running everything normally, the internal drive comes up as A: and the USB drive appears as B: I've physically disconnected the internal drive inside the machine. In the BIOS I've disabled the floppy drive as a boot device. In Windows Device Manager I've disabled the floppy drive controller. A floppy drive still shows up in device manager and it can't be disabled there, only uninstalled. If I uninstall it Windows re-installs it on boot. Under this configuration no A: drive shows up in Windows Explorer but the USB drive insists on being B:. The USB drive shows up in Device Manager but there is no option to force a drive letter assignment. The BIOS on this box is primitive; there is no option to swap the A: and B: drives like I used to see on some machines. I'd be grateful for any suggestions on how I can force my USB floppy drive to come up as A:. Thanks!
