Thanks Dave.

I'm waiting to hear back from the client whether they are requiring a static IP
and secure ftp or whether a dynamic IP and regular FTP will suffice.

Michael,
Setting up an FTP site is no problem, but securing it "COULD BE". As
a
starter take a look at CuteFTP home version:

http://www.cuteftp.com/cuteftp/

Which is only $39 and really easy to set up even if you have a dynamic IP
address, in which case use a free service such as noip with their no-ip free
version:

http://www.no-ip.com/

Register a fixed domain name there for free e.g www.MMadigan.no-ip.com which
will point at your PC/server. On your PC/Server you put a free piece of
software again from no-ip which tells the DNS at NO-IP your dynamic IP
address and keeps a connection open//live every 2 or 3 minutes.

That's it, install cuteFTP, set up user access and download/upload areas on
your PC and your are ready to go. Oh, and yes, set up your router to allow
access to/from the FTP Ports and/or set up the PC as a DMZ.

If you want to be really secure then buy CuteFTP Pro which has all the bells
and whistles security.

Subject: [NF] Setting up FTP site

I am in need to set up an FTP server for a client.  We need it to be
secure.  It is so that one client can send collection data to him.  It will
be only used by one client.

1.  Should I host it on a local computer or should I host it on a site such
as godaddy?

2.  If I host it locally, what ftp server software would you recommend.  We
are using windows XP on all machines, even the server.

3.  What are the pitfalls of setting up FTP?

4.  Does this make me any more vulnerable to hacker attack?
