Hi Jeff-

I spend 100% of my development time in virtual machines which I host
on my laptop. I still do quite a lot of VFP development, and thus I
find the VM environment more than capable for both testing and
development. I happen to be hosting on a Windows XP machine, but
there's no reason I couldn't also be hosting from Linux with the same
positive experience as far as the VFP development is concerned.

While it's true there's a small performance hit for running in a VM,
I find that I almost never notice it. I happen to be running Vmware
workstation which I find to be far better for performance than MS
virtual software. Of course when it comes to hosting on Linux, you
needn't worry about the slow MS performance since Linux isn't
supported anyway, no surprise.

Like everything else, nothing's perfect, and there are a few
drawbacks to using VM's exclusively (largely related to managing the
VM disk image), but I find the benefits far outweigh the few small drawbacks.

I don't predict it will ever be easier to develop VFP on Linux
directly as compared to running in a VM.

The only disclaimer is that a VM requires a fairly decent machine,
and most certainly a dual core processor, so if your experiences are
on an older computer with aging specs or a single cpu, you should try
evaluating VMs again on today's hardware (even a 500$ machine should
be fine provided it's dual core).

Good luck and post back how your success or failure goes with VFP on Linux.
-Steve
