Andrew,
Not abandoned but if you want to be able to remote in then you need the
other end to be "authorized" which isn't possible sometimes. In Teamviewer,
you can set it up as a service - hence unattended. I've made a request for
this to be available as an enhanced feature in Crossloop but it isn't
imminent. 

Richard is correct in that Teamviewer is free for non Commercial use.
