Some of you may be aware that I'm somewhat a fan of Open Source
software. Even got in trouble once or twice after espousing said
leanings in public....

There is a group out there, frustrated with Twitter's performance (and
lack thereof), who have decided to look for an alternative. Identi.ca,
based on an open source microblogging platform, Laconica v 0.50, has
been that alternative.

When espousing its superiorities, they immediately start waving the "But
it's OPEN SOURCE! Twitter ISN'T! Therefore, Identi.ca MUST be better!"

Why is that?

If they'd argue that it's got more features, or that it's more reliable,
or that it'll make me more handsome, yes, those are benefits to me, and
those would be rational arguments.

But Laconica is not as feature rich, Identi.ca doesn't have nearly the
userbase that Twitter does, and... hey, microblogging is a free chat
tool. I don't run my business or my pacemaker on it. If it's down an
hour a week, that's OK. I'm still getting my money's worth.

I'm using twitter as a service, just like weather.com, amazon, netflix,
google, and ebay. The engine under the hood doesn't matter to me.

Yet these arguments don't matter to the Identi.ca proponents. Either
they're irrational zealots, or I'm missing something. Right now, I'm
leaning toward the former, but I'm willing to listen.
