First... I never took anything a social studies teacher said too seriously.

Second, the time frame may be shorter but it is irrelevant.

Third, and I'm not saying this is the way it should be, but when prices start 
rising, they go up immediately at the pump because, even though the owner may 
have paid a lower price for his current stock, he has to replace it at a higher 
price and that is what we are paying for.  

Besides, the guys running the stations are working on very thin margins and are 
not the ones making the big bucks, which is why, for the most part, real 
service stations have gone away, replaced by mini-marts where if you want to 
pay cash you have to wait in line with yoyos getting cancer sticks, lottery 
tickets and a six pack.  That's why I pay with a card at the pump.

There was a comment that crude prices dropped 20%, but the price at the pump 
only dropped 10%.  True, but that's for the cheap stuff.  If you get the good 
stuff, it has not dropped nearly as much.  I guess they are counting on a 
semi-inelastic demand... but if you shop around you can still minimize the 
damage to your wallet.
