I stink at searches too, I often have a hard time finding what I want, and yet it seems certain friends of mine can find anything immediately, so maybe there's something obvious I'm missing..
As for your Linux problem, I may be able to help, so email me off list with the exact specifics and problems you're experiencing and I can try and help you out.. My first impression would be to suggest if you are logged in as root and see if that solves your problem.
