Bob, Most of us didn't have a problem with Bush staying out of the immediate area in the absolute beginning of the Katrina crisis. What we had a problem with was that he did not follow the crisis even in the news, and that his aids had to make a DVD for him to watch so he could be convinced to act.
Staying away or going in those first 24-36 hours was never the issue. If you recall, Obama was sandbagging during the midwest floods for 4 hours, and put his back into the crisis. McCain is 72 and partially disabled, so nobody expects him to be filling and placing sandbags. But there wasn't a lot of press about what Obama did then -- and that was deliberate.
