I usually do something like this:
WAIT WINDOW [Finding Excel...] NOWAIT NOCLEAR
LOCAL loExcel AS Excel.Application, loWorkbook AS Excel.Workbook,
loSheet AS EXCEL.Worksheet
TRY
loExcel=GETOBJECT(,[excel.application])
CATCH && swallow the error if excel isn't running.
ENDTRY
IF VARTYPE(loExcel)<>[O]
TRY
loExcel=NEWOBJECT([excel.application])
CATCH TO loError
FINALLY
ENDTRY
ENDIF
