There was a great debate in the last ACM "Communications of the ACM"
on the Pros and Cons of electronic voting. I think the HAVA Act was
disasterous, and we don't have a means of reliably auditing any
computer system that doesn't use paper ballots. Diebold and Sierra and
their ilk need to go back to square one and have some computer
scientists actually create a reliable machine. Who really cares if it
takes a week to count the ballots?
