Well, then, that's a choice you have to make.

I'm running Fedora as my primary OS, and learning to live with the
occasional frustration: the cutting-edge kernel didn't have full
support for my wireless card and couldn't suspend. So I found a work
around.

I chose Fedora even though it's a little rougher around the edges than
Ubuntu because it more closely matches the Red Hat Enterprise and
CentOS platforms I have my client's projects deployed upon, and I find
it easier to keep them all straight.

Just back from a Ruby conference last week. "All the cool kids" had
MacBooks, like 5:1, a couple Windows, a half-dozen Linux. You have to
decide if you want to put up with the heckling ("No Textmate? What do
you use -- Emacs <*snort*>?") and the platform differences. I am
comfortable in my choice.

I still have to run Windows, in order to properly test IE6 and IE7 in
their native environments with their native fonts.

I had to choose to leave VFP behind. That was one of the toughest
decisions in my business.

Wifi is certainly an Achille's Heel of open source OSes -- it's hard
to write code when the hardware manufacturer is unwilling to
cooperate.

FYI, Ubuntu versions are Year-and-Month based, so 8.10 is October
2008. The next version due out is April 2009, which will be 9.04. In
the meantime, Ubuntu has fantastic online community support where
you're likely to find a work-around for your problems:
