Ok, I thought the screen going wacko was some foolish thing I did. It
seems that Ubuntu does not support any more the nvidia geforce2 video
card and with the new ATI/AMD controller for linux liberated on 8/21 it
might have some issues. When I changed some settings in the "desktop"
options it went down.
I had some time and googled for my wireless adapter, found this page
that might come handy to someone :

it was for me. So I downloaded the realtek linux driver and, maybe
tomorrow or next week, will see if I can follow the installation
instructions (shit, couldn't they just give you an executable that would
install it for you, that's how it works in w$). If I can do that then
I'll have to download the nvidia drivers in order to go from 800x600 to
1024x768.
 I used to install debian easier than this, and it recognized my video
card immediately (OTOH I had a normal cable connection).
