My problem is wireless access to a printer that is already defined and 
working from multiple machines with multiple operating systems.  I posted 
a trimmed copy of the original post with "(trimmed)" at the end of the 
subject line.  

It seems we have concluded that the problem is "beyond weird" and there 
is no point in fighting it any further.  I tend to devote entirely too 
much time to trying to resolve such things.  I justify it based on the 
assumption that an unexplained glitch is likely to come back and bite me 
later.  It would probably be smarter to just get rid of the device.
