It looked like the companies originally expected to continue doing
business as usual until Congress said they wanted more. All those
years of fighting higher CAFE standards instead of producing more
fuel-efficient cars caught up to them when gas went over $4/gallon,
and they're not ready to ship IRON that consumers are looking to buy;
the drop in gasoline prices is balanced by the very daunting
employment picture.

I imagine that the bailout is supposed to allow the Big 3 to make the
transition to a fleet that guzzles less gas and is more appealing to
buyers, but that looks like it will take a Herculean effort, and there
may not be enough time, money, or clever executives to allow it to
happen.
