In a previous job that I worked with a guy for nearly 20 years over all, we worked extremely well together in an "extreme programming" environment long before we even knew such a term existed. It can work well as long as both people involved compliment each other's strengths and can make up for the other's weaknesses. You can't just take two people and throw them together and achieve the desired results. In my case, the use of two people far exceeded the output the two of us could do singularly.
