I think that, at least for some cases, keeping users from being able to write 
to the 
application directory is probably a good idea. A virus could attach itself to 
the exe 
there with the user's permissions, for example.

I agree that this is a good idea, though (but I'd still keep the users from 
being 
able to write to that directory).

For user-installed programs (which are perfectly appropriate) I let them 
install to 
My Documents.
