It's will always be running in the background if apps like iTunes and
Google Desktop Search and the like are hooked into it - if that is not
the case then AFAIK it closes and terminates like any other version.

 But I agree if it is already resident it shouldn't open another
 instance, because as you say it is quite the porcine application.
