French President Nicolas Sarkozy gave a good smackdown to President Obama's
call for Turkey's admission to the European Union. He's right. Deciding
membership is a task for Europe, not the U.S.

Sarkozy had no choice but to say something after Obama called for
membership, to "ensure we continue to anchor Turkey firmly in Europe." Sure,
it broke the smoothness of Obama's first presidential tour of Europe, but he
had no choice.

"I have been working hand in hand with President Obama, but when it comes to
the European Union it's up to member states of the European Union to decide"
on members, France's leader said. "I have always been opposed to this entry
and I remain opposed."

It's not hard to see why. Turkey, a Muslim state whose would-be conquerors
Europe fought for centuries, was the anvil that enabled Europe to forge its
identity and rise as a civilization. Murals in Renaissance chapels and
Medieval war songs express with a jolt that reality. And still today,
Turkey's a gulf apart from Europe.

Obama, who is not a Muslim, mind you, gave his first TV interview as
president to Al Arabia. He favors increasing Muslim influence in Europe by
supporting Turkey's entry into the EU. He is grateful to Islam for all the
contributions to America it's made. He appreciates families who grew up in
Muslim countries, like Indonesia, where his Muslim family lived during his
childhood. He bowed down to and kissed the hand of the King of Saudi Arabia.

But he is NOT a Muslim. Repeat: Barack. Hussein. Obama. Not a Muslim.
