This is so true. You invest a *little time* learning how to run common terminal apps from the command line and moving around the file system, mounting volumes, renaming files, searching for text in files, and reading man pages, and you realize that it is an extremely robust system built from tiny little parts that interact well with each other because they all conform to the same interface standards[1]. And then when you feel stuck, or just lazy about figuring out how to configure something the way you want it, you turn to google. For example, just today I was wondering how to put a SSL certificate on one virtual host in apache, while still using another SSL cert on some of the other virtual hosts. I found out quickly that it was not possible, and that I needed to put the new site on its own ip address. Everything is cryptic when you don't know the lingo. But I promise that if you invest the time to objectively try out and learn how to move around in Linux, that time will not be wasted. Linux is based on UNIX, after all, which smart people have been developing for almost 40 years now. To be sure, I'll be learning new things on Linux till my dying day - nobody can be an expert at everything. But since 2002 or so, I've been building on what I learned the day before as well as working on Windows and Mac and I tell you, Linux is the OS to learn to love. [1] They all accept input from stdin and they all output to stdout, and command line switches tend to be more or less universal, too.
