I have had no issues with Ubuntu 7.01 or 8.10.  I would choose either as 
my OS of choice.  Ubuntu is easy to install - easy to navigate - very 
intuitive.  I booted up Ubuntu for my 85 year old pop that is just 
learning Windows and he loves it.  My mom says it's "pretty."

YMMV but if you try it you may like it.
