A vendor should not be forever tied to backwards compatibility. But in the free market of productivity software, there are a few good choices now. OpenOffice 3 does a great job opening and saving MS Office files, for example. People that dislike Microsoft's software should really vote with their feet rather than bitching about the situation all the time.
