Well, of course due to the features 'arms race' between the AV vendors
they all tend to do a lot more than just AV signature scanning these
days. The Kaspersky I have does (in realtime):

AV scanning
Outlook email scanning
Web traffic scanning (i.e. port 80 HTTP traffic etc)
IM scanning
Application heuristic scanning
Firewall
Anti-spam
Anti-banner
Popup blocking
Parental control

... yada yada yada. So it's no wonder there's a performance hit.
