Doesn't sound like your efforts have been quick, saved you time, or have only been a few hours. Seriously, with a professional (vs. consumer) SMTP service, your code should take 10 minutes. Really. And even if you use a non-gmail SMTP service, you can still set the sender and reply-to fields of your outgoing emails to your friend's gmail address.
