You have a firewall issue.  I just went through this this week myself.
 Old client wanted to know why the functionality that worked years ago
no longer was working.  They put in a new exchange server to start and
the new firewall / security settings made sure that NOTHING was
getting out unless it was legit.

As they tweaked over the day I would get different error messages.
