Peter, Does the strange object show up on the application desktop of other workstations or just yours?
Does the strange object show up when run from another user account on your workstation? XP or Vista? Standard Windows theme of custom theme? Any other software running in the background? I would try to isolate the environments which cause the strange object to appear. Then I would try turning off as many 3rd party background tasks as possible (virus checking, etc) to determine if the object's appearance is caused by a 3rd party application or your own?
