If you aren't a gun nut, a 20 gauge pump shotgun is a good start. Or a 
.38 revolver. Get plenty of ammunition since you will have to take 
lessons and practice.

Reloads are fine for the range, but for home and personal defense always 
use factory loads. If you use reloads the lawyers for the dead 
criminal's common-law widow will claim you are a psychotic killer who 
planned so thoroughly he had special ammunition.
