Prepare for more of this attitude, especially as things move more towards
cloud-based apps. While I personally feel that my personal data is something
I own and should control, that view is not shared by organizations that
store large amounts of client data. There is no apparent "ownership" on the
part of the client, and there is no option to not have your data exposed, so
this sort of situation is going to happen over and over and over again. Not
only in crime scenarios, but also profiling, marketing and whatever it is
the data holders feel is appropriate or profitable to do with the data.

Subject: [NF] We're definitely maybe serious about data breach notification,
yes, *definitely maybe*

Hi Everybody,

 From Health IT email:

http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Health-Care-IT/Health-IT-Data-Breaches-No-Harm-No-F
oul-293398/

As an editor of SANS puts it: "Ok... let me get this straight: I screw up
and let someone steal your data. Then *I* (an acknowledged screw-up) get to
decide if my screw-up poses any harm to you!?!? What could possibly go wrong
with that? Next up: rapists, murderers, and felons get to decide if they're
ready to be released from prison..."
