In the main tools options, reports the setting is OFF with report engine
behavior set to be 80 (Backward Compatible).

Just to clarify, do you have save printer environment off as your default in
Tools->Options or are you unchecking it on the Report menu while editing the
frx?

Ok, 
1. Set the "save printer environment" off
2. Add testbox to the report - the "save environment" doesn't change, so far
so good.
2. Double click the added text field, bring up properties
3. Style tab, change the font size to say 18 or something fairly large, then
OK
4. The "save environment" setting will now be checked.

Using VFP9 SP1 here, don't know if it happens with SP2 as I removed it a
while back.
