Well, if it's really under $999, I can see your point.  But I admit that 
my memory was reaching back 10 years ago when we were looking into a 
VeriSign certificate that was costing over $3000 iirc.  Total bs, imo, 
for that kind of cost for what you're getting.  But as you said, if 
you've got lots of customers, perhaps worth it.

Here at the day gig (Sylvan), we've got over 1000 different places as 
customers, and we simply document "when you see this screen, press 
[OK]."  Perhaps not as polished/professional as paying the extortion, 
er, uh, digital signature fee, but works fine and all of our customers 
trust us just fine....no one (afaik) raises a brow over it.
