US President Barack Obama suffered a painful defeat in Massachusetts
on Tuesday. With mid-term elections looming, it means that Obama will
have to fundamentally re-think his political course. German
commentators say it is the end of hope.

Actually quite the opposite -- it is the beginning of hope!

These analyses are quite entertaining. I especially enjoyed the
Financial Times Deuchland:

"For Obama, the election in Massachusetts means that he will have to
re-evaluate his political style. He could now focus his concentration
on his political base and push through his policy agenda. After all,
he still has a majority in Congress -- he could back away from his
strategy of bipartisanship ... which would mean giving up much of what
he spent his first year in office creating."

Which strategy of bipartisanship might that be? The one of cherry
picking one or two ultra liberal Republicans so they can get 60 votes,
and telling the rest to pound salt, don't even bother showing up in
the smoke filled rooms where only union representatives and
"progressive companies" get to lobby?

I sure hope Obama takes their advice and goes (even more) for the
base. C'mon, quite pretending, go ahead and put those Mao posters &
Che Guevara flags up right there in the Oval Office, paint the joint
yellow and red, what's can you lose at this point?

Seriously---what planet are these people on? Even the voters of
Massachusetts, ordinarily quite OK with one party rule, voted for a
guy promising to end one party rule...there is a fairly big clue
hiding in that fact for these schnitzels.

"It ought never to be forgotten, that a firm union of this country,
under an efficient government, will probably be an increasing object
of jealousy to more than one nation of Europe; and that enterprises to
subvert it will sometimes originate in the intrigues of foreign
powers, and will seldom fail to be patronized and abetted by some of
them. Its preservation, therefore ought in no case that can be
avoided, to be committed to the guardianship of any but those whose
situation will uniformly beget an immediate interest in the faithful
and vigilant performance of the trust." [Federalist Papers #59]
