Reason pre-2003 or so: MySQL was faster, easier to set up, and easier to 
maintain.

Reason post-2003 or so: it is easier to keep maintaining MySQL now that I know 
it 
intimately, than to jump over to a different technology that I'd have to spend 
time 
learning.

I've been meaning to learn Postgres, and want to switch to it, but there just 
isn't a 
compelling reason to do so when MySQL serves all my needs.
