With Linux, you keep trying distros until you find one you gel with. Ubuntu is about to release their new LTS (Long Term Support) version, 4.10 in April. But don't just stand idle waiting for that. Go to http://ubuntu.com, download the live cd, and see if it boots. Upgrading to the new version in a month will be easy.
