Speaking of smart phones, there are a number of offering beginning to 
catch up to the iPhone; although, I don't think there are any currently 
better or even comparable to the iPhone.  Particularly interesting is 
Google's Nexus One.  Hardware seems to be pretty decent, and I think it 
will be supported on networks other than just AT&T, but AT&T now offers 
a plan for the Nexus One, (eg see link below)

The Nexus One runs the Android OS, which is based on a special 
distribution of the Linux kernel, specifically for mobile devices.  Java 
is the primary development application in the Android OS.  Google, like 
Apple, now has an app store with a growing number of application being 
made available by developers targeting the Nexus One and other mobile 
devices featuring the Android OS.
