They teach us, correctly, that North and South America are 2 distinct and different continents. Will have to forgive your lack of understanding on this point and chalk it up to where you went to school.
As far as no country named America, again you fail. America is how the United States of America is often shortened to around the world, much as U.S.A. is used to represent it as well. As any citizen of Canada if he or she is American and the answer will be No. As a matter of fact, I am unable to locate any citizen of a country on the South American continent that refers to themselves as an American, with the notable exception of you Ricardo.
