If you Americans want to save on oil then do what the rest of the world does. TAX IT. You have ludicrously low fuel prices which is why you use/waste so much of it. High prices are a disincentive to waste and an incentive to economy. ECONOMIC 101, but apparently no one in your government has yet understood that.

Depending on where you live you might ride your bike to the bus stop where you put your bike on the bus for use in the end of your commute. That bus is already there on the road so the savings is 100% on your side. Learning that less is more.
